A family recycling challenge: 5 rules that keep it fun

24 October 2026 · 2 min read

Returning cans and bottles can feel like a chore, or it can feel like a game. The difference is usually not the cans. It is how the family sets it up. These five rules help a recycling challenge last.

1. Pick one goal everyone wants

A shared goal beats a vague "let's recycle more". Choose something the whole family cares about, give it a name and an amount, and write it down where everyone can see it. When the goal is clear, every can has a reason.

2. Make progress visible

Children understand what they can see. A growing pile, a bar that fills or a flag that goes up shows that their small contribution matters. If the progress is hidden in a notebook nobody opens, the excitement fades.

3. Let everyone count their own

Give each person their own tally. When a child adds their own can, they feel responsible for the result, and a little friendly competition appears on its own. Keep it playful. The goal belongs to the family, not to the winner.

4. Choose a return day

Cans pile up in the hall until somebody gets annoyed. Pick a regular day for the trip to the shop, such as the weekend shop. A routine turns the chore into something to look forward to, and children can help carry the bags.

5. Celebrate the small steps

Do not wait for the final goal. Mark the first €10, the halfway point and the last stretch. A cheer, a high five or a photo of the pile is enough.

A practical tip before the trip

The return machines in Finnish shops do not pay deposits for crushed cans, so keep them in their original shape. Cans and bottles should also be empty, with plastic bottles keeping their label and cap, according to Palpa.

Start small

You do not need a perfect system. One goal, one visible place to count and one return day is enough to begin. If you want a simple way to do all three together, start your own Kasa.
